With Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven alone, one would have enough string quartet music to fill a whole year of concerts. The French string quartet literature, however, may be wholly represented within the span of a few concerts at most, and that would include works not often performed. The famous French composers Ravel, Debussy, Fauré, and Franck all only wrote one quartet each, and it is the first two that are performed the most. Although this music has not completely abandoned their German predecessors, no longer is sonata form at the foremost priority, rather their reaction manifests in a focus on color, texture, ambiguity, dreams and exoticism.
